Gate of Hell in Turkmenistan. A strange phenomenon occurred in the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan that is the smoldering crater or often referred to as the Gate of Hell. Located near the remote village, Derweze, home to 350 people, crater has a width of 60 meters and a depth of 20 meters. This crater is continually generate fire and burned for 38 years.
Locals call this smoldering crater as the crater Gas Darvaza (Gate of Hell) in Turkmenistan.
Smoldering crater events or Gate of Hell in Turkmenistan is not a natural phenomenon, but due to accidents from industrial activities. A drilling rig with the Soviet Union did not deliberate on the underground caves that store natural gas in massive amounts, occurred in 1971. This activity is causing the surrounding land to collapse, and the whole rig drilling into it, so the issue of natural gas poisoning.
